Merimbula Travel Guide

Located on the Sapphire Coast of New South Wales, Merimbula is a quiet town with fewer than 7,000 permanent residents. Merimbula is known for its beautiful bays of shimmering water and wildlife. When you visit the town, you’ll see picturesque views of turquoise water.

Merimbula is located about 240 kilometres southeast of Canberra, so Canberra-locals will be able to easily access a prime destination for their next holiday retreat. It’s also an easy day trop from both Sydney and Melbourne.

Things to do in Merimbula

Due to its idyllic oceanic climate, Merimbula is a suitable travel destination throughout the entire year. During the summer months, the weather of Merimbula is mild and warm. During the winter months, you should expect weather that is dry and cold. Throughout the year, the average monthly temperatures fluctuate between 4 and 25 degrees.

Located on the edge of the Sapphire Coast, a walk along the Oyster Trail will guide you to scenic views of the South Pacific Ocean. Keep an eye out for birds on lovely beaches. While the scenic aspects of the Oyster Trail are remarkable, you’ll also enjoy the oyster markets and fishing attractions. Purchase some fresh seafood, and admire the vast waters that stretch beyond the horizon.

We personally love spending time at Bar Beach, a small sheltered beach facing the main inlet of Merimbula Lake. This is a really good beach to bring young children or to have a go at stand-up-paddle boarding. The Bar Beach Kiosk is also a local favourite serving top quality coffee and cooked food starting from breakfast. The Kiosk is open seasonally from October through April.

Follow the Coastal Wilderness Drive to escape civilisation. Thea areas around Merimbula have not been touched by the amenities of modern living. Drive along winding roads that look out across blue waters and flawless beaches. While most of the roads near Merimbula are well-maintained, you may wish to use a 4WD vehicle to explore some of the remote forest roads.

Complete your exciting adventure by climbing to the top of Gulaga Mountain.
