Phillip Island Weekend Getaway
Phillip Island is a small landmass in the centre of Bass Strait off the coast of Australia. Located just 140 kilometres southeast of Melbourne, Phillip Island is easily accessible from all of Australia’s major cities. Travellers frequently visit Phillip Island to enjoy its rural charms. With a population of approximately 10,000 people, Phillip Island is a quiet place throughout most of the year.
When you visit Phillip Island, you will enjoy a journey through one of the most pristine natural areas in Victoria. Phillip Island has picturesque marine scenery that is adorned with beaches, cliffs, and coves. You may also encounter various species of plants and animals. Due to its diverse avian populations, Phillip Island is listed as an important bird area by BirdLife International. During your travels across the island, you may encounter fairy penguins, gulls, and short-tailed shearwaters. The area also shelters wallabies and kangaroos.
Phillip Island was occupied by the Bunurong Aboriginal people for thousands of years before the arrival of European explorers. Europeans made contact with the island in 1798 when the legendary explorer Matthew Flinders explored Bass Strait and other areas of New Holland. After Flinders reported the economic endowments and natural resources of Phillip Island, hundreds of sealers and farmers travelled to the island to earn profits. This influx of Europeans resulted in a series of conflicts between the settlers and the Aboriginal people. Phillip Island was eventually named after Governor Phillip of New South Wales.
