There are a number of Queensland public holidays in 2018 that are well suited to those who would take the time to explore the unique treasures this vast state offers, including pristine beaches, the Daintree Rainforest, and just offshore, the Great Barrier Reef.
When is the best time to travel to Queensland? As far as maximizing your holiday time with an extended weekend, try: New Year’s Day, which falls on a Monday in 2018, or Australia Day (January 26th), which falls on a Friday. Both create three-day weekends, but Christmas Day falls on a Tuesday and Boxing Day on the following Wednesday in 2018. Many Queenslanders will simply take the intervening Monday off with annual leave and gain a five-day holiday weekend.
Things to see and do in Queensland in 2018
Here are three top spots to visit in Queensland during the 2018 holiday schedule, if you haven’t yet made your travel plans:
Take a trip to Queensland’s far north to Cairns, and you can experience the white sands of Mission Beach, with its nearby rain forest to explore, a diving adventure amid the colourful sea life of the Great Barrier Reef, and a look at the curious rock formations and lava tubes of the area known as “the Savannas.”
Just off the Queensland Coast lies Hamilton Island, part of the Whitsundays Island Group, which are certainly popular to visit on holidays aside from just Whitsunday. Once there, you can sunbathe and swim at Catseye Beach, go on a boat tour to discover hidden coves along the scenic coast, or snorkel in the waters of the nearby Great Barrier Reef.
Within Cedar Bay National Park, in the extreme far north of Queensland, is a truly remote wilderness that tourists flock to explore. You can trek to the top of Black Mountain on an old miner’s trail and see the remains of an old tin mine amid the Black Snake Rocks. Bush camping is also permitted, and the park is a birdwatcher’s paradise.
